However, there's one thing that makes this iPad release different from ealier ones: The new iPad will be the Apple device that goes head-to-head with Windows 8 tablets when they arrive later this year. Microsoft's new OS will spawn an entirely different species of tablet than the Android devices that have so far been Apple's main competition. And if Microsoft plays its cards right, it could be the one that finally gives the iPad a serious challenge in the market.
So far, no product has been able to do that. The first "real" Android tablets, like the Motorola Xoom, were largely ignored by consumers. The newer tablets and latest Android upgrades are certainly better, but they're still hampered by an amorphous ecosystem. Those examples of up-scaled phone apps on Android that Tim Cook cued up in his keynote were pretty damning, and he also said there were 200,000 iPad apps in the App Store. Google doesn't give an official count of tablet-specific Android apps in Google Play, but estimates are in the thousands.
Tablet Non-Contenders
Non-Android tablets look even worse. RIM fumbled the launch of the BlackBerry PlayBook so badly that the tablet -- and possibly RIM's whole credibility in the space -- will never recover. HP killed its consumer tablet offering, the TouchPad, mere weeks after launch upon realizing the iPad was an opponent it couldn't hope to defeat.
Certainly, the Amazon Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Nook are success stories, but they kind of cheated. Both have only managed to carve out a niche market among tablets by selling their devices at a rock-bottom prices (the Kindle Fire's is so low that Amazon may be selling it at a loss). They can only do this by using the device itself as an outlet to sell specialized content. These products aren't going toe-to-toe with the iPad -- they're fighting over the scraps of the market it's left behind.
So far no device has been able to seriously challenge the iPad experience in its entirety. Basically, the tablet market has yet to see its Motorola Droid, the phone that finally showed, along with Android 2.0 software, that the iPhone wasn't the end-all-be-all of smartphones. Android's success skyrocketed after its release.
Windows 8 Tablet to the Rescue?
Could the tablet market's dark horse be a Windows 8 device? It's possible, but it hinges entirely on how consumers respond to the new user interface, Metro.
The thrust of Windows 8 -- and why it's such a big gamble my Microsoft -- is that it brings the same UI to tablets and traditional PCs (desktops and laptops). Metro is ideally suited for touchscreens, but it works with a mouse and keyboard, too.
There's a reason Microsoft has done this, and it's not really the spirit of bringing tablet features to your laptop. Quite the opposite, in fact. In order to have any hope of succeeding in tablets, Microsoft has to convince its army of Windows developers to make software for those tablets. But no one's going to develop software for an unproven OS where the company has seen little commercial success (no current Windows tablet has significant market share).
However, if your entire OS, including traditional PCs, is running the same software, then developers almost have no choice but to design apps for tablets. Windows 8 essentially turns all Windows developers into tablet developers, potentially giving the Windows 8 tablet platform the fuel it needs to expand rapidly and finally give the iPad a real opponent.
The Catch: Metro
Again, almost. There's one thing that could hold it back: consumers rejecting Metro. You see, Windows 8 lets any user turn off Metro and just use the traditional desktop. If enough of them do, many developers may simply choose not to create Metro apps. After all, if most of your customers are just switching to the old Windows environment anyway, why bother?
That would let the air out of the expanding Windows 8 tablet balloon pretty quickly, and that's even before we consider the wild cards of potential device fragmentation, how Windows will work on ARM devices and whether or not consumers will even accept a tablet as their main computing device.
Microsoft needs to get Metro 100% right if Windows 8 tablets are going to have any hope. If users like Metro, then the developers will follow, and a real ecosystem will emerge. If not, the iPad will probably be the only tablet worth talking about for a long, long time.
Windows 8 Tablet Vs iPad 3 - The Tablet War Begins
Microsoft's Windows 8 Consumer Preview was made available to download yesterday, giving everyone a chance to experience the company's most revolutionary change in user interface since Windows 95. The interaction paradigm has shifted from a mouse-centric desktop to a touch-friendly, highly visual Metro style UI. The old Start orb has been retired and replaced by a Charms bar, which is brought to life with an inward swipe from the right. A swipe from the top down dismisses the app you're in and returns you to the home screen, and the left and bottom edges also have actions associated with them. Gestures play a very significant role in Windows 8, but they're only one aspect of a truly gargantuan list of changes.
While the Consumer Preview software remains at the beta stage, its central concepts have now been fleshed out, so we thought this would be a fitting time to compare them against Apple's iPad, the incumbent leader in the tablet space Microsoft is seeking to become a player in. iOS 5 and Windows 8 share a few similarities, but the user experience is fundamentally different and informed by different interaction metaphors. You can see those detailed in the video below, and if you care to learn more about what else has changed under the Windows hood with version 8

Windows 8 looks amazing! Do you think that Nokia is coming to Tablet markets? What happens when Samsung is going to sell both Android and Windows tablets?
I think the windows 8 tablet may be my first tablet purchase!
I have always been concerned about Apple monopolizing all state of the art technology, not allowing diversity in purchases, and in the end, allowing them to charge whatever the hell they want! (even more than they do right now!)
I own a Windows Phone 7 (HTC Trophy) and have enjoyed using it much more than my wife's iPhone 3. The only negative I can say is that general features like flash player for the browser should be available, yet that comes down to third party issues anyway.
As long as Microsoft catches up or exceeds with features this time, I believe their UI may attract people who are starting to tire seeing a fruit label on their hardware.
I wn a Windows 7.5 HTC HD7. I have had no negative things to ever say about this phone except the app market. Expand there and Windows will take off past Apple and their overy priced restricted tablets and Phones. Im ready for this and when it happens Apple will have a grea run for their money. I can not wait for Windows 8
I have tried Windows phone 7 and I own a iPhone 4gs.
I have been a Windows developer for 12 years and all I can say is that Microsoft has some very big hurdles to jump over to beat Apple at this point.
This year I bought my first Apple computer since my college days back in the 90s and I plan on rolling out several new iPhone and iPad applications in the near future. Even if Windows 8 Metro is a great OS, they will have to come up with some inexpensive hardware to beat the competition.

I've heard that Apple computers make you double post. =)
Very exciting. I'm waiting for Windows 8 tablet to hit the market as I'll be getting me a Windows 8 phone as well.
Windows is always backward compatible and runs on various hardware. I really don't get it why people are buying Apple products other than the looks.
"Windows is always backward compatible and runs on various hardware. I really don't get it why people are buying Apple products other than the looks."
For actual PC's people buy Apple products for the superior hardware and the more "stable" (read less prone to malware) OS. Apple controls the hardware their OS's go on and so can in turn make sure it is up to their standards, something Windows doesn't do obviously. Which is why you can pick up a Windows PC for so cheap, because Mircosoft doesn't care what you install Windows on. As for the "stable" part, Windows 8 will be addressing this with their tablets that run on ARM, they will be looking down the OS like Apple does and this will greatly reduce, possibly even eliminate, malware infections.
EDIT: locking down the OS, not looking. That's what I get for not reading before I post.
Windows zuigt kei hard
All I have to say is apple will give you as little features and hardware as possible for an incredibly high price. I look forward to having a tablet that is Superior in every way: it will have a cpu and gpu I want, I won't get charged $100 for 8gb of memory, I will be able to use usb and a SD card (Holy shit apple it does exist), I will have the ability to run actual applications not just shitty apps. Windows 8 on tablet wins hands down. Mac hardware has never been superior dollar for dollar, if you think so your a fool.
Apple doesn't use superior hardware. They tailor Intel based socket boards with minor alterations, unless it's to bypass a standardized connection.
Example you can't just purchase a hard drive and stock it in an iMac. It uses a seven pin proprietary connection to connect it to the motherboard.
The hardware is so inflated it's insane, case and point. You can buy a few model Sells for 420 dollars, but the hardware is so similar to an Apple you can boot Mac OS X. You can even create more intense Hackintoshes for less then an Apple.
The stroke of genius for Apple is they locked down Unix with their OS X GUI to give you the illusion of performance. The software is optimized and tailored for so few hardware components they can focus and control performance.
The true power behind OS X is what Apple didn't create Unix. Unix is an open source OS designed specifically for long uptime, memory efficiency, and multi user.
Apples less susceptible to malware and viruses? If that were true a built in malware detector wouldn't be integrated into OS X. They'd do significantly better in pwn to own competitions. A guy exposed a firmware flaw in Macbook batteries that causes them to explode. Or an exploit in their app store, rather then fix it they ban his developer account and deny it.
Locked down eco systems are bad because exploits are found and a few find patches. Where open source starts off faulty and riddled with exploits but eventually becomes more secure and more optimized.
Apple is no better then any other manufacture, they just marketed existing technology better and created an illusion that consumers bought into.
Remind me one more time.
How many years ago did Apple introduce the ipad?
And how much of the smartphone market did Windows once have?
Stockholders might argue that MS is a bit late to the party.
Apple is at $600 per share and MSFT is still at pre-2000 $30's.
Ballmer is, has been, and will be the problem.
I really hope windows 8 has cisco anyconnect vpn access. I'm frustrated that my windows phone 7 doesn't have it still.
LOL HILARIOUS I can say that I've known people who bought an apple laptop just to install windows on it and yes windows care that's why you have the x64 encrypted version also x64 doesn't limit on your ram which is beasting plus who can't build a comp that runs better than apple for the price your paying for that desktop or laptop I've always been a windows fan apple UI in my case just is starting to look old and there isn't much apps to fun desktop switching looks program to start up now with metro I already tried consumer and loving it already. plus some apps don't exist in Mac os apple UI...then you can't run your program you want
ETF I don't see why these things compete its not like he cares hahaha ok I just googled and WTF Bill Gates - apple - windows... I don't think he would really care he still gettin something...
Nice and let me tell you one thing, It's not my hobby to post comment to other blogs, But you written it very well So I made up my mine to post comment to your blog.
Peggy, you obviously don't know how stocks work. I'll admit Apple has more value but the price per share means diddly squat. If you have 1,000,000 shares at $3 you're still worth more than the company with 20 shares at $1000. I'm not sure how many shares of either company exist but it's quite simple to understand.
I cannot wait until I can buy a Win8 tablet but I do have one big gripe. The tablet has its physical bezel then a huge black border around the tiles especially on the top. The iPad can display 24 icons but Metro seems to be very limited since it only has three rows! I want to be able to fill up that window and add two more rows. The size of the tiles you add seem to be dictated by the app and I wasn't able to change the size in most of the apps. If everybody wanted to use double wide tiles you'll wind up scrolling over and over since you can't display as much on the first page.
I want efficiency! More rows and less black borders!!
Microsoft has to try harder than their competitors, they need to make people that bought their products happy. While they may or may not be confirming anything, it's pretty much a given that everyone with WP7 will get the upgrade, infact it doesn't makes sense that they wouldn't if they want to maintain Windows as the prevailant OS. Your desktop, your tablet your phone will be running Windows 8, and since they aren't as mainstream as Android, yes, they'll updated their older phones.

Hope some phones come out with a functional stylus. Thinking of getting the galaxy note but it's a little too big. Will wait for windows 8 to arrive and decide then.
Apple was always fooling people. Their Marketing department is a stronghold. All those fools waiting whole night on the street to get an iPhone or iPad. Example: "iPhone 4 key notes video on www.apple.com some time ago - ... now you can make video calls with Face Time. It is so, so GREAT ... BUT YOU AND THE OTHER PERSON MUST BE IN WiFi RANGE .." I was able to make video calls back in 2005 or 2006 in 3g range with my Nokia N70. Some people don't now facts. I will buy Windows 8 smartphone and Ultrabook for sure. Just can't wait.
windows 8 looks amazing and a better option compared to the iPad
I'm waiting for Windows 8 tablet to hit the market as I'll be getting me a Windows 8 phone as well. So I can sync it up with my Xbox account and share my apps/music/games. And then their is SmartGlass...... Enough said. Android and Apple are the ones who will needing to catch up. And I would be willing to PAY MORE for a windows device that isn't made in factories where people are committing suicide, just so apple share holders can make a profit......
i will wait for windows surface
windows 8 base nokia handsets also leaked out have look at it seven colour gossips
